SI 2023/861. The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2017 (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2023. Coming into force 10th August. These Regulations amend the ATEX Regulations to reflect that no part of the United Kingdom is part of the EU, whilst ensuring the ATEX Directive and the Windsor Framework are implemented in respect of Northern Ireland.

RI 2023/379. Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) Rules 2023. Regulations published 20th July. These Rules, which apply to ships constructed on or after 1984, replace and update Fire Protection Rules for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of Chapter II-2 of the annex to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS Convention) in relation to ship construction – fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction. The Rules revoke the Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) Rules 1985 (RI 1985/279) and the Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) (Amendment) Rules 1990 (RI 1990/86).

RI 2023/380. Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) (No 2) Rules 2023. Regulations published 20th July. These Rules, which apply to ships constructed on or after 2002,  give effect to the provisions of Chapter II-2 of the annex to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS Convention) in relation to ship construction – fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction.

EU 2023/1542.  Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries.  Comes into force 18th February 2024.   This Regulation lays down requirements on sustainability, safety, labelling, marking and information to allow the placing on the market or putting into service of batteries within the Union. It also lays down minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility, the collection and treatment of waste batteries and for reporting.

RI 2023/395. European Union (Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2023. Regulation published 28th July. Amends the definition of “The Directive” in Regulation 3 of European Union (Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2012 (RI 2012/513).
