DEFRA consultation

DEFRA is consulting on proposals for the Drinking Water Regulations 2016. Consultation closes 14th This consultation seeks views on regulations which will revoke and replace the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000 and the Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009.  The main points to note are:

Application of new monitoring requirements for radioactive substances as laid down in Directive 2013/51/EURATOM. For public water supply; the introduction of two changes, one to reduce the waiting time relating to the use of new sources of water and one to clarify requirements concerning data storage. Bringing new private water supplies into the monitoring regime. Additional wording and numbering changes to improve clarity where the Drinking Water Directive (Council Directive 98/83/EC) has been transposed. Changes to improve clarity of the regulations for water companies and local authorities

Cheshire construction company fined £97,500

A Cheshire construction company has been fined £97,500 with £300,000 costs following an accident in 2011 at a site in Wimslow when an employee sustained fatal crush injuries when a pack of bricks fell on him. An HSE investigation found that the storage of materials was poorly organised and pallets used to store and move bricks around the site were also in poor condition.

Haulage firm fined £90,000

A Runcorn haulage firm has been fined £90,000 and ordered to pay £67,500 in prosecution costs after an employee was crushed to death, in January 2011, by a runaway lorry. The HSE investigation found that the deceased did not normally drive articulated vehicles, had not received training on coupling lorries, and there was no written procedure for the work

SSI 2016/46

The Carbon Accounting Scheme (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2016. Comes into force 1st April. These Regulations amend the Carbon Accounting Scheme (Scotland) Regulations 2010 (SSI 2010/216).
