Port operator fined £300,000

A Merseyside port operating company has been fined £300,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,593 after a worker was struck by a load falling from two fork lift truck (FLT). An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found no suitable risk assessment relating to the hazards arising from loading bundles of rebar onto reversing flatbed trailers had been carried out. The tandem FLT lifting operation carried out was also not properly planned, supervised or carried out in a safe manner.

September news letter

In our September news letter we report on one new piece of, Scottish, environmental legislation and five amendments to legislation on chemicals and hazardous substances, energy, health and safety, plant health (Scotland) and waste (Scotland). We also report on a consultation on changes to the rules for capacity market, a prosecution following a fork lift truck accident and on the publishing of the second edition of Guidance Book L140, Hand-arm vibration.

We will provide a summary of all relevant EU Exit related legislation before Brexit Day, whenever that may occur in a separate news letter.

Second edition of guidance book on hand-arm vibration published.

HSE has published the second edition Guidance Book L140, Hand-arm vibration. The new edition has been updated in keeping with changes to related legislation, technical advances and experience. The emphasis is on the control and management of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV). HSE has also made updates to the hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure calculator.

SI 2019/1253

SI 2019/1253. The Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products and Energy Information (Amendment) Regulations 2019. Comes into force 30th September. Amends Schedule 4 of Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products Regulations 2010 by adding a reference to Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/424 on  ecodesign requirements for servers and data storage products.  Also amends Schedule 1 of Energy Information Regulations 2011 (EU measures), by omitting the entry for vacuum cleaners.
