A Cumbria-based producer of cellulose film packaging has been fined £200,000 after workers were exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas, released from the site’s drains. The court heard that while control measures had been implemented in the production area, there was inadequate assessment relating to the potential for the build-up of the gas in the drainage system. An HSE Inspector commented “this shows the importance of conducting a thorough and robust assessment to ensure that all risks are properly identified and managed. It is vital that all pathways to exposure to dangerous substances are fully considered and controlled.
