Auction mart fined £75,000

The operator of a Carmarthenshire cattle mart has been fined £75,000 following the death of a seventy-five year old man who was knocked down and trampled by an escaped cow. An employee of the mart was also injured in an unsuccessful attempt to capture the cow.  An HSE Inspector commented “The case highlights the importance of following industry guidance, which is readily accessible and outlines the requirements to safely manage cattle”.
